The Chébé ritual,
step by step.
Exact doses, timing, and the small details that turn a powder into a ritual. Every step here is how our community — and the Bassara women before them — actually use it.

The Three Steps
Hydrate. Apply. Braid.
The whole ritual takes about 20 minutes. After that, the Chébé does the work for the next 3 to 7 days.

01
Hydrate
The Chébé clings to moist hair, not dry hair. This step is non-negotiable — skip it and the powder will not bind to the strand.
- 1Fill a spray bottle with warm water (or use our hydrating mist).
- 2Section your hair into 4 parts — front-left, front-right, back-left, back-right.
- 3Mist each section until lightly damp, not dripping. Detangle gently with the wooden comb, root to tip.
Insider tip
For very thick or coily hair, add a pump of leave-in conditioner to the spray. The slip helps the powder distribute evenly.

02
Apply
The exact ratio matters. Too much oil and the powder slides off, too little and it clumps. This is the formula our community uses week after week.
- 1In a small bowl, mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of Chébé powder with 3 to 4 tablespoons of black castor oil (or your preferred carrier oil).
- 2Stir into a smooth, spreadable paste — about the texture of a clay mask.
- 3Apply section by section, focusing on lengths and ends. A small amount goes on the scalp; the rest stays on the lengths where breakage happens.
- 4Massage gently for 2 to 3 minutes. You should see the paste turn slightly darker as it absorbs.
Insider tip
Wear gloves if you do not want temporary darkening on your fingertips. It washes off — but only after a few rinses.

03
Braid & Rest
The braids do two things: they protect your ends from friction, and they keep the Chébé on the strand long enough to do its work.
- 1Braid your hair in 4 to 8 large braids (not too tight — you want comfort, not tension).
- 2Cover with the silk bonnet at night. This is what keeps the ritual from rubbing off on your pillow.
- 3Leave the braids in for 3 to 7 days. Most of our community settles on 5 days as the sweet spot.
- 4On rinse day: undo the braids, rinse with lukewarm water until clear, then shampoo and condition as normal.
Insider tip
You can refresh the braids mid-week with a light water mist if your scalp feels dry. Do not re-apply Chébé — once a week is enough.
The Exact Dose
How much, for your hair.
The right ratio is what separates a great ritual from a messy one. Find your hair length below and start there.
One tablespoon equals roughly 15 ml. If you are between two sizes, start with the smaller dose — you can always add more next week.
Make it Work
Do this. Skip that.
The Do’s
- Use the ritual once a week, no more.
- Always start on damp hair, never bone-dry.
- Sleep with the silk bonnet — every night.
- Drink water. Healthy hair starts inside.
- Be patient. Visible results take 30 days.
The Don’ts
- Do not leave the powder in dry hair — it will not absorb.
- Do not use more than twice a week, even if tempted.
- Do not skip rinse day. Build-up dulls the shine.
- Do not braid too tight. Tension causes breakage.
- Do not expect miracles in week one. Trust the rhythm.
Common questions
Asked & answered.
How often should I do the ritual?+
Once a week. The Bassara women of Chad have done it this way for centuries — more often does not give better results, it gives build-up.
Can I wear the braids only overnight?+
Yes, but the ritual works best when the Chébé stays on the strand for at least 48 hours. Overnight gives some shine; three to five days gives length retention.
My hair feels stiff after I rinse. Is that normal?+
Slightly textured, yes. Stiff, no. If it feels stiff, you used too much powder. Reduce by half a tablespoon next time and follow with a deep conditioner.
Will it darken my hair color?+
Chébé has a natural brown tint, so it can darken very light or bleached hair by half a shade temporarily. On dark or natural-textured hair, no visible color change.
When will I see results?+
Softness and shine: within the first two rituals. Less breakage: around week three. Visible length retention: 30 to 60 days, depending on how often your hair breaks today.
