The Ingredient

What is Chébé?

A 1,000-year-old Chadian hair ritual. The reason the Bassara women have some of the longest hair in the world. Here is everything you need to know — without the marketing nonsense.

Origin of Chébé

Chari-Baguirmi, Chad

Where it comes from.

Chébé (pronounced shay-bay) is a fine powder made from the crushed seeds and leaves of Croton zambesicus, mixed with mahogany resin, cloves and stone, then ground by hand.

For at least a thousand years, the Bassara women of the Chari-Baguirmi region in Chad have used it as a weekly ritual. It is the reason their hair commonly reaches the lower back or waist — without salons, heat tools or chemical relaxers.

The recipe was passed from mother to daughter for generations. It only started leaving Chad in the last decade — and even today, less than 1% of the Chébé sold on the global market is sourced authentically.

The Science

Why it works for coily, curly, and kinky hair.

Chébé does not make your hair grow faster — no product does. What it does is stop you from losing the length you already grow. For type 3 and type 4 hair, that is the entire game.

Seals in moisture

The blend of natural resins coats each strand and locks hydration inside the cortex — where curly hair loses it fastest.

Stops breakage

By cushioning the lengths during friction (pillows, clothes, detangling), Chébé reduces the micro-breakage that quietly kills your growth.

Protects between washes

Worn braided in for 3–7 days, it keeps your hair undisturbed. Less manipulation = more retained length over time.

The Ritual

How to use it.

01

Hydrate

Mist your lengths with water or a hydrating spray. Chébé bonds to wet hair — it will not work on dry.

02

Mix & apply

Mix the Chébé powder with black castor oil into a thick paste. Massage into your scalp and through your lengths.

03

Braid & leave in

Braid your hair, cover with a silk bonnet at night. Leave in 3 to 7 days. Rinse out. Repeat weekly.

The Honest Part

Why most Chébé online isn't really Chébé.

90% of the “Chébé” sold online is not Chébé. It is colored corn flour, henna, or generic plant powder rebranded with a Chadian-sounding name. The reviews tell the story — bags of women disappointed that nothing happened.

Questions

What everyone asks.

How long until I see results?+

Softness and shine: after the first ritual. Reduced breakage: 2–3 weeks. Visible length retention: 30–60 days. Real transformation: 3 months on the ritual.

Will it work on my hair type?+

Chébé is designed for coily, curly and kinky hair (types 3B to 4C). It also works on relaxed and locked hair. It is less suited to straight or fine type 2 hair.

How often do I do the ritual?+

Once a week. Apply, braid, leave in 3 to 7 days, rinse out, repeat. That is it.

Does it smell strong?+

Authentic Chébé has an earthy, smoky scent — that is the resin and the cloves. It fades within an hour of applying. Many of our customers grow to love it.

Can I use it without braiding?+

Yes, but you lose 40–50% of the effect. The braid is what keeps the powder in contact with the hair shaft long enough to seal it.

Is it safe during pregnancy?+

Yes — Chébé is a pure plant-based ritual with no known contraindications. As with any cosmetic product, check with your doctor if you have specific concerns.
